As of 2024, the following criteria will govern listing on the Physician Locator.

  • Successfully completed their initial Intracept Procedure training.
  • Performed at least 5 successful Intracept Procedures within the preceding 6 months so as to demonstrate a commensurate level of skill, competence, and familiarity with the Intracept Procedure. A procedure with patient complaints does not satisfy this criteria.
  • To be added back to the Physician Locator, a physician must perform at least 5 successful Intracept Procedures within the preceding 6 months.
  • Additionally, Boston Scientific Physician Faculty that train and educate their peers at Boston Scientific-sponsored programs meet eligibility requirements.

Boston Scientific may remove a physician from the Physician Locator at any time and without notice should Boston Scientific conclude that any of the following has occurred: (i) failure to satisfy the criteria to qualify for listing; (ii) discontinuing performing the Intracept Procedure with sufficient frequency to demonstrate a high degree of skill and competency; (iii) any alleged or suspected violation of a federal or state law governing healthcare professionals and/or the practice of medicine; and/or (iv) any action related to a physician’s professional license, or the actual revocation of a license.

In addition, a small percentage of providers may qualify to be designated as an Intracept Procedure Center of Excellence.

The Intracept Procedure Center of Excellence (COE) Program is designed to highlight chronic low back pain (CLBP) physicians who specialize in the Intracept Procedure and consistently strive to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences. Physicians included in the COE Program have achieved a high level of training and experience with the Intracept Procedure and demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a high level of proficiency in performing the Procedure.

To qualify for our Intracept COE designation, a physician must meet the following additional criteria:

  1. Participate in the 12-month period prior to submission for designation or re-designation in a minimum of: 
    • Two Boston Scientific Professional Education-led educational events for initial designation, and
    • One Boston Scientific Professional Education-led education event per year for re-designation.
  2. Complete a minimum of 30 Intracept cases in the 6-month period prior to submission for designation and maintain at least 3 cases per month average annually (i.e. 36 total annual cases) for re-designation.
  3. Attest to tracking patient outcomes.
  4. Have an active website presence which includes education information pertaining to Intracept.
  5. Complete a minimum of one patient-facing or referring physician education activity in the 12-month period prior to submission for designation.
  6. Participate in a minimum of two Program Reviews per year to review patient outcomes, latest clinical data and discuss best practices.

Depending on the month of initial designation, COE physicians will be required to complete annual re-designation requirements to obtain re-designation for the following year.

  • If designated between January-June, physician is redesignated the following June.
  • If designated between July-December, physician is redesignated the following December/January.

Important Safety Information

Indications for use: The Intracept™ Intraosseous Nerve Ablation System is indicated for patients who have had chronic low back pain for at least six months, who have tried conservative care for at least six months, and whose MRI shows features consistent with Modic changes – indicating damage at the vertebral endplates has led to inflammation. Not every patient who meets these criteria is a candidate for the Intracept Procedure, however – in fact, there are specific characteristics indicating a patient should not be considered for the procedure.

Contraindications: Patients who are pregnant. Patients with weakened cardiac or pulmonary function, having an active implanted electronic medical device in the body (such as a pacemaker or defibrillator), being diagnosed with a systemic or local infection, or having an anatomy that could be damaged unintentionally while ablating the basivertebral nerve (based on your physicians’ clinical review). Patients who are skeletally immature – which generally means individuals under the age of 18 are not candidates.

Warnings: There are also certain risks and precautions regarding the procedure which you should be aware of before proceeding. With all medical procedures, there are risks and precautions associated with the procedure and the use of the device, talk with your doctor about what indicates, and contraindicates, certain patients for the Intracept Intraosseous Nerve Ablation System. Caution: U.S. Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician.

  • The Intracept Access Instruments and the Intracept RF Probe are single patient use only. The Introducer Cannula, Diamond Stylet, Bevel Stylet, J-Stylet, Straight Stylet, Drill, and Probe may be used to treat up to a maximum of four (4) vertebrae (L3, L4, L5, S1) on a single patient, while the Curved Cannula may only be used on one (1) vertebra on a single patient.
  • As with any surgical instrument, careful attention must be exercised to ensure that excessive force is not placed on the Instruments or Probe. Excessive force can result in product failure.
  • Prior to the procedure, CT or MRI imaging must be utilized to help define the desired treatment site and define working anatomical landmarks that can be used for mapping access to the treatment site.
  • The device should be manipulated only while under fluoroscopic or CT observation.
  • DO NOT use this device in the presence of flammable anesthetics, other flammable gases or objects, near flammable fluids such as skin prepping agents and tinctures, or oxidizing agents. Observe appropriate fire precautions at all times. There is a risk of pooling of flammable solutions under the patient or in body depressions and cavities.
  • Fluids pooled in the body depressions and cavities of the patient should be mopped up before RFG is used.
  • There is a danger of ignition of endogenous gases (e.g., cotton and gauze saturated with oxygen may be ignited by sparks produced during normal use of the RFG).
  • Operator may choose to use smoke-plume extraction apparatus, though the indicated procedure is unlikely to produce noticeable smoke
  • The Probe is for use WITHOUT a neutral electrode (i.e., a grounding pad).
  • Discontinue use if inaccurate, erratic or sluggish temperature readings are observed. Use of damaged equipment may cause patient injury.
  • Prior to operation, visually inspect the Probe and RFG for physical damage, obvious cracks in insulation or loose parts.
  • During power delivery, the cable should not come in direct contact with the patient’s skin or other patient leads.
  • Safety and effectiveness in patients with conditions that are associated with poor bone quality such as osteoporosis have not been established.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
Use of the Intracept Intraosseous Nerve Ablation System is contraindicated in:

  • Patients with severe cardiac or pulmonary compromise
  • Patients with active implantable pulse generators (e.g. pacemakers, defibrillators)
  • Patients where the targeted ablation zone is < 10 mm away from a sensitive structure not intended to be ablated, including the vertebral foramen (spinal canal)
  • Patients with active systemic infection or local infection in the area to be treated
  • Patients who are pregnant
  • Skeletally immature patients (generally ≤ 18 years of age)

WARNINGS

  • Do not use if package is opened or damaged as product integrity and/or sterility may be compromised.
  • Do not use after the expiration date has passed as product integrity and/or sterility may be compromised.
  • Do not re-sterilize or reuse. Re-sterilization or reuse may result in cross contamination, patient infection, or device malfunction.
  • Reconditioning, refurbishing, repair or modification of the device to enable further use is prohibited.
  • Do not use this product if you have not been properly trained in its use. Physicians using the device should be familiar with the physiology and pathology of the selected anatomy to be treated and be trained in the performance of the chosen surgical technique. Improper surgical use and technique may lead to suboptimal clinical outcomes.
  • Read and understand the Instructions For Use (“IFU”) completely prior to use.
  • The Intracept System must be used with the Relievant Medsystems RF Generator in order to provide the required treatment parameters.
  • Failure of the RFG could result in an unintended increase of output power to the Probe.
  • The Intracept RF Probe may interfere and adversely influence the operation of other electronic equipment.
